Dana Point
Harbour of Whales
Portrait
Richard Henry Dana described this cove in Two Years Before the Mast in 1840, when hides were thrown from the cliffs to ships below; the harbour was built in 1971 and the town has been a whale-watching port ever since. Grey whales pass in winter and blue whales feed offshore in summer, and that timing decides when to come.
