Louisville
Two Minutes in May
Portrait
Churchill Downs has run the Kentucky Derby since 1875 without missing a year, which makes it the longest continuously held sporting event in the United States, and the race itself lasts about two minutes. The city arranges a fortnight around it — a balloon race, a steamboat race, a parade — and the rest of the year runs on bourbon, which is distilled within an hour of here in every direction.
