Sapporo was laid out on an American-style grid in 1869 when Japan colonised Hokkaido, hiring advisers from Massachusetts — which is why a Japanese city has numbered blocks and wide streets. It receives around five metres of snow a season, hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, and its February snow festival carves buildings out of two million tonnes of it.
