Almaty

The wild ancestor of the domestic apple, Malus sieversii, grows in the mountains around Almaty, and genetic work has traced every cultivated apple back to these forests — the city's older name, Alma-Ata, means father of apples. The Medeu rink at 1,691 metres has hosted more world records than any other, because thin air and mountain meltwater make exceptionally fast ice.
