Bengaluru sits on a plateau at 900 metres, which gave it a mild climate and a reputation as a garden city and pensioners' town; public-sector aerospace and electronics arrived after independence, and the software industry followed from the 1980s. It now hosts several thousand technology companies, and the infrastructure has never caught up with the growth.
