Austin built its identity on live music — it calls itself the live music capital of the world, with a venue for every few hundred residents — and SXSW grew from a music festival in 1987 into the technology industry's spring meeting. Dell, then Apple, Tesla and Oracle followed, and the city has grown so fast that the slogan about keeping it weird now reads as nostalgia.
