Bangkok

Bangkok was built on canals and called the Venice of the East until most were paved over for roads in the twentieth century; the Chao Phraya and the surviving khlongs still carry commuter boats. Its full ceremonial name runs to 168 letters and is the longest place name in the world, which Thai schoolchildren learn as a song.
