Portrait
Walt Disney bought around 110 square kilometres of Florida swamp and orange grove in the mid-1960s through anonymous shell companies so the price would not rise, and the resort that followed made a town of eighty thousand into the most visited destination in the United States. The state granted the company its own governing district, an arrangement contested only in the 2020s.
