Palm Springs
Mid-Century Oasis
Portrait
Hollywood's studio contracts required actors to stay within two hours of Los Angeles, and Palm Springs was exactly that far — so the industry built weekend houses, and architects like Neutra, Lautner and Wexler used the desert to experiment with glass, steel and flat roofs. The dry air preserved them, and the town now holds the densest concentration of mid-century modern housing anywhere.
