Portrait

Pittsburgh produced up to half of American steel and had air so bad that streetlights burned at noon; the mills closed in the 1980s and the city rebuilt on medicine, robotics and universities, with Carnegie Mellon at the centre. It has 446 bridges, more than any city in the world, and three rivers meeting at a point where a fort once stood.
