The 1925 earthquake flattened the centre, and a design board rebuilt it entirely in Spanish Colonial Revival — white stucco, red tile, wrought iron — with rules still enforced today. The result is the most architecturally coherent city in California, between mountains and ocean, with the wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley forty minutes inland.
