Sun Valley / Ketchum
America's First Ski Resort
Portrait
A railway chairman built Sun Valley in 1936 to give his trains a winter destination, and an engineer adapted a banana-loading conveyor into the world's first chairlift for it. Hemingway finished For Whom the Bell Tolls in a room here and is buried in Ketchum, where he shot himself in 1961.
