Pete Seibert served with the 10th Mountain Division, which trained for winter warfare in Colorado, and came back to build a resort on a mountain he had noticed then — Vail opened in 1962 with one gondola and a village designed to look Tyrolean. Its back bowls cover more skiable terrain than most European resorts have in total.
