Ninh Binh

The same limestone towers that fill Halong Bay stand here in flooded rice fields, and the tenth-century capital of Hoa Lu sits among them, which is why the area is called the inland Halong. Rowing boats go through the Tam Coc caves — rowed with feet, as the local women do — and cycle between the temples rather than joining a bus tour.
