Sulphur springs at thirty-six degrees drew the Habsburg court here each summer, and the town was rebuilt in Biedermeier style after a fire in 1812 — modest, symmetrical and comfortable, which is what the period meant. Beethoven summered here fifteen times and worked on the Ninth Symphony in a house that is now a museum.
