Mariánské Lázně has around a hundred cold mineral springs in a valley enclosed by forest, and Goethe came here at seventy-two and fell in love with a woman of nineteen, writing the Marienbad Elegy when refused. Edward VII met Franz Joseph here, Chopin and Wagner took the cure, and a musical fountain plays on the hour in the colonnade.
