Spa's iron-rich springs were drawing visitors by the sixteenth century, and the town's name entered English as the generic term — Peter the Great came in 1717, and the pump rooms filled with European royalty for two centuries. The Formula 1 circuit at Spa-Francorchamps in the hills above is now better known than the water.
