Richard I was imprisoned in the castle above Dürnstein in 1192 on his way back from crusade, and England paid a ransom of thirty-five thousand kilos of silver. Below it the Wachau's dry-stone terraces grow grüner veltliner and riesling on steep schist, classified by altitude — Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd — rather than by sweetness.
