Ferruccio Biondi Santi isolated a sangiovese clone and aged it far longer than anyone thought sensible, producing the first Brunello in 1888; only four vintages were declared in the following half-century. The hill town above the vineyards has a fortress you can drink in, and the Val d'Orcia below is the Tuscan landscape everyone pictures.
