Portrait

The monolithic church at Saint-Émilion was cut downward into the limestone from the eleventh century — the largest underground church in Europe, hollowed rather than built — and the same rock below the village holds the cellars. Vines have grown here since the Romans; the village was the first vineyard landscape UNESCO listed, in 1999.
