The university is the oldest Catholic one still operating, and its library was burned twice by German forces, in 1914 and 1940, losing three hundred thousand volumes the first time. The Den Hoorn brewery, working here since 1366, became Stella Artois and eventually the world's largest brewer, which means a town of a hundred thousand runs both a medieval faculty and a global beer headquarters.
