The treaty signed here in 1992 created the European Union and the euro, which is fitting for a city where the Belgian and German borders are minutes away and the Dutch spoken is closer to Limburgish. Beneath it run kilometres of marl quarry tunnels used as shelters and as a hiding place for Rembrandt's Night Watch in 1942.
