Chernivtsi
Little Vienna
Portrait
Chernivtsi was the capital of Austrian Bukovina, a province so mixed that the city was called Little Vienna and administered in German, Romanian, Ukrainian, Polish and Yiddish at once. Josef Hlávka's residence for the Orthodox metropolitans, finished in 1882 in polychrome brick with Byzantine and Moorish motifs, is now the university and a World Heritage site.
