Sarajevo
Where Four Faiths Meet
Portrait
Sarajevo has been called the Jerusalem of Europe because Ottoman, Sephardic, Catholic and Orthodox communities built within a few streets of each other, and the Sarajevo Haggadah of around 1350 survived both the Nazi and the Yugoslav wars in this city. The siege from 1992 to 1996 was the longest of a capital in modern history, and roses of red resin still mark where shells landed.
