The Dutch burned Olinda in 1631 and the Portuguese rebuilt it in baroque on its seven hills, then the commercial life moved down to Recife and left the churches, convents and painted houses undisturbed. Its carnival has no sambadrome, no tickets and no floats — giant puppets and frevo bands move through the streets and everyone follows on foot.
