Dazu

Carved Cliff Sutras

Portrait

The Dazu rock carvings were made between the ninth and thirteenth centuries and differ from earlier Buddhist sites in being narrative and domestic — parents raising children, a drunkard, a farmer with his buffalo — Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian subjects side by side, made for people who could not read. Around fifty thousand figures survive across several hillsides.
