The Chandela Temples

Portrait

The Chandela dynasty built some eighty-five temples here between 950 and 1050; twenty-five survive, carved over every surface with gods, musicians, animals and the erotic figures that made them famous — around ten per cent of the total, and probably illustrating tantric or symbolic themes rather than instruction. The site was swallowed by forest and only rediscovered by a British engineer in 1838.
