Axum
The Obelisk Field
Portrait
Axum was the seat of a kingdom that traded with Rome and India and minted its own coins, and its granite stelae — one of them thirty-three metres and now fallen — were raised as grave markers around the fourth century. A chapel here is said to hold the Ark of the Covenant, guarded by a single monk who never leaves; nobody else is permitted to look, and the claim is central to Ethiopian Christianity.
