Portrait
The Kumbum at Gyantse, finished in 1427, is a nine-tiered stupa containing seventy-seven chapels whose walls carry an estimated hundred thousand painted and sculpted images — a complete Tibetan Buddhist pantheon arranged as a three-dimensional mandala you walk up through. The town also holds a fortress the British shelled in 1904 during Younghusband's expedition.
By permit Tibet travel permits are required for foreign visitors.
