A bishop of Avranches built an oratory here in 708 after the archangel Michael, in the third apparition, reportedly burned a hole in his skull to make the point — the skull is displayed in Avranches with the hole in it. The tides move faster than a walking pace and rise fourteen metres, which kept the abbey unconquered through the Hundred Years' War.
