Tomar
The Templars' Convent
Portrait
The Knights Templar built the round Charola here in the twelfth century on the plan of the Holy Sepulchre, and when the order was suppressed in 1312 Portugal simply renamed it the Order of Christ and kept everything — the same knights, the same castle, the wealth that later funded the voyages of discovery. The Manueline window of the chapter house is the most elaborate carving in Portugal.
