Kucha was an Indo-European-speaking Buddhist kingdom on the northern Silk Road, and Kumarajiva was born here in 344 — taken as a prisoner to China, he translated the Buddhist canon into Chinese in versions still used today. The Kizil caves nearby hold murals from the third century, among the earliest Buddhist paintings in China, many cut out and taken to Berlin in 1906.
