Aswan

The Nubian Threshold
Ancient CitiesNature Gateways
Portrait

Aswan marked the boundary between Egypt and Nubia, and its quarries supplied the granite for obelisks and sarcophagi — an unfinished obelisk still lies in the rock, cracked and abandoned, showing exactly how they were cut. The High Dam of 1970 created Lake Nasser and forced the relocation of Abu Simbel and the displacement of a hundred thousand Nubians.
