Gateway town: Aswan

Ramses II carved these facades into sandstone around 1264 BC; in the 1960s UNESCO sawed both temples into a thousand blocks and rebuilt them sixty-five metres higher, ahead of the rising water behind the Aswan Dam. Twice a year the dawn sun still reaches the inner sanctuary — the relocation preserved the alignment to within a day.
