Angkor
The Temple Sea
Gateway town: Siem Reap
Portrait
Angkor covered a thousand square kilometres and perhaps three quarters of a million people at its height around 1200, sustained by a hydraulic system of barays and canals that eventually failed. Ta Prohm comes first, while the light is low and the strangler figs are still in shadow, and save Angkor Wat for late afternoon — the reliefs face west and are meant to be read then.
