Siem Reap was a village until the French rediscovered Angkor in the 1860s, and it now exists to serve the temples six kilometres north — Angkor Wat alone covers 160 hectares and was built in the twelfth century for a population served by a hydraulic system that eventually failed. The name means Siam defeated, which Thailand has never enjoyed.
