Gateway town: Nyaung-U
Portrait

Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries the kings of Pagan built over ten thousand religious structures on this plain; some two thousand remain, most of them brick, many still holding lacquered Buddhas. Hire an e-bike rather than joining a tour, go out at dawn when mist sits between the stupas, and choose a lesser temple over a famous one for sunset.
