Portrait

Pu'er is fermented tea pressed into discs and aged — unlike other teas it improves for decades, which made it both a commodity and a speculative asset, with old cakes selling for extraordinary sums. The tea-horse road carried it to Tibet on mule caravans for a thousand years, traded for the horses the Chinese armies needed.
