Confucius was born here around 551 BC, and his family held a hereditary noble title and occupied the mansion beside his temple for seventy-seven generations until 1937 — probably the longest continuous family residence anywhere. The cemetery holds his grave and those of more than a hundred thousand descendants in a walled forest two kilometres across.
