Trinidad's wealth came from the sugar mills of the Valle de los Ingenios and the enslaved people who worked them; when Cuban sugar shifted west and the mills failed, the town was left with cobbled streets and pastel mansions and no reason to change them. Nothing significant was built here for over a century.
