Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in the castle here in 1191, having taken Cyprus on his way to the Crusade almost by accident. The same town now runs the island's main port and one of Europe's larger ship-management clusters, and the towers along its seafront were built for the people who run them.
