Portrait
Henry Morgan sacked Panamá Viejo in 1671 and the Spanish rebuilt eight kilometres west on a defensible peninsula — the Casco Viejo, now restored beside the ruins of the first city. The canal, opened in 1914 after the French attempt failed and around twenty-five thousand workers died, still carries a significant share of world shipping and funds the country.
