Lalibela

The New Jerusalem
Sacred CitiesAncient Cities
Portrait

King Lalibela had these churches excavated from the living rock as a new Jerusalem after Muslim conquests closed the pilgrimage routes, and they are carved out rather than built — trenches dug around a block, then hollowed inside. They are still parish churches: services run before dawn, priests keep the crosses, and pilgrims in white fill the trenches at Christmas.
