Tórshavn
Grass Roofs in the Rain
Portrait
The Faroese capital has around fourteen thousand people and is the smallest capital in Europe by some counts, with turf roofs in the old quarter that are cut and maintained rather than decorative. The islands have no trees to speak of, the wind removes hats and occasionally roofs, and the parliament meeting on Tinganes claims descent from a Norse assembly of around 900.
