Rapa Nui is 3,500 kilometres from the nearest inhabited land and 3,700 from Chile, which makes it among the most isolated inhabited places on earth, and its people carved nearly nine hundred moai from one quarry and moved them, by argument still unsettled, up to eighteen kilometres. The island was deforested by the time Europeans arrived, and what caused that remains the subject of an unresolved scientific dispute.
