Yasawa Islands
The Village and the Reef
Portrait
Around eighty-seven per cent of Fiji's land is held under inalienable communal title by indigenous clans and cannot be sold, only leased — which is why the Yasawas have small resorts on village land rather than the developments found elsewhere in the Pacific. The chain was closed to cruise ships until 1987 and to land-based visitors until the late 1980s, and a visitor arriving in a village still presents kava to the chief.
