Colmar changed nationality four times between 1871 and 1945 and escaped bombing almost entirely, so the timber-framed houses, the tanners' quarter and the canals of Petite Venise stand as they were. The Unterlinden Museum holds Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece, painted for a hospital where patients with ergotism were shown a Christ covered in their own symptoms.
