The Genoese Salt Coast
Portrait
Genoa founded the citadel above the gulf in 1539 and abandoned it twice to malaria before the salt pans below made the town pay, and those pans worked into the twentieth century. The granite coast south of it breaks into inlets of white sand against umbrella pine, which is why an island better known for its mountains is booked here in August for its beaches.
