The bay drops to ninety-five metres a short way from the quay, which made it one of the deepest natural anchorages in the Mediterranean and kept the United States Sixth Fleet moored here from 1948 until 1966. Behind the waterfront runs the Rue Obscure, a vaulted street built under the houses in 1260 and still walkable, and on the harbour Jean Cocteau painted a fishermen's chapel in 1957.
