Charlemagne chose Aachen for its hot springs and built a palace chapel in 796 that became the model for imperial architecture and the coronation church of thirty German kings over six centuries — he is buried in it. The Netherlands and Belgium are both within a few kilometres, and the springs at fifty degrees are still in use.
